The distance between each light generally depends on the LED wattage of your light. Most electricians space recessed lights equally apart from each other forming a grid pattern on the ceiling. If you have a pipe, wire, joist or other obstacle in your way, you may be able to use the conventional installation method, if you have enough room to get a junction box through your hole.
